Question If you don't show up for work one Friday without calling anybody and telling them you won't be in that day, is that enough for your employer to be able to fire you?
Phil- 07-02-2008
In general, most employment is deemed to be 'at will', meaning that either the employer, or employee, needs no cause to terminate the employment relationship.
There are exceptions but your best bet is to check with your state labor board.

Yes.

I should think that that would be pretty obvious...

If they're already sick of you and looking for a reason, then you just gave them one.
Florida is an at will work state.

Thanks for the answers, guys. I was wishing I didn't have to go to work today and my mind started to wander and I wondered if they really would fire someone for skipping one day of work. Never seen it first hand so I wasn't sure if that was real or Hollywood.

In Florida you can fire anyone at any time, but if you don't have a good excuse, you could get credited for unemployment. If you fire somebody for the wrong federal reasons, you could get in trouble.

Here's another question. Can they fire me if I ask an incompetent person in a higher position than me who he blew to get that high up in the company?

Is it too difficult for you to pick up the phone, and call in sick?

At the time, I thought none of the other immediate higher ups would be in the office so I thought I was going to have to call in sick to the one bastard.

That job probably wouldn't pay enough to cover the gas.
I like my job. I just hate this one jerk there. Now the guy is being a mondo jerk because he got in trouble with the boss for not providing his workers with important information. Now he's trying to get me back for refusing to take his crap anymore.
