Truck Driver Convicted in Human Smuggling Case That Left 19 Illegal Immigrants Dead Disassociated Depressed- Monday , December 04, 2006 HOUSTON — A truck driver was convicted Monday for his role in the nation's deadliest human smuggling attempt, in which 19 illegal immigrants died from dehydration, overheating and suffocation. The trial's punishment phase was set to begin on Wednesday and was expected to last about a week. Jurors will decide whether the driver, Tyrone Williams, should be sentenced to death or life in prison. The federal jury convicted Williams of 58 counts for the transport and deaths of illegal immigrants during a May 2003 smuggling attempt. His sweltering tractor-trailer was packed with more than 70 immigrants who scraped at the insulation, broke out the taillights and screamed for help in escaping the tomblike trailer. Williams had no visible reaction when the verdict was read, but accepted a long hug from his lawyer, Craig Washington, before being led away by U.S. marshals. "I am deeply disappointed," Washington said. Washington told reporters he would present about 20 witnesses during the punishment phase to help the jury decide "whether they should take this man's life." Prosecutors declined comment on the verdict, but said each side would have about three or four days to present sentencing evidence to the jury. Prosecutors said Williams was responsible for the deaths because he didn't free the immigrants or turn on the trailer's air conditioning, which could have saved their lives. Some survivors -*test*-('")ified they thought the air conditioning had been turned on. Washington said his client transported the illegal immigrants but wasn't responsible for their deaths because he didn't know they were dying until it was too late. Washington blamed another smuggling ring member for causing the deaths by overstuffing the trailer. Williams, 35, a Jamaican citizen who lived in Schenectady, N.Y., is the only one of 14 people charged in the case who is facing the death penalty. Last year, a jury convicted Williams on 38 transporting counts, but he avoided a death sentence because the jury couldn't agree on his role in the smuggling attempt. The jury deadlocked on 20 other counts. The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected the decision, saying the verdict didn't count because the jury failed to specify his role in the crime. In his retrial, Williams faced 58 counts of conspiracy, harboring and transporting illegal immigrants, 20 of which were death penalty eligible. Since the new jury convicted him on counts eligible for the death penalty, it will hear evidence in a punishment phase before deliberating on whether to sentence Williams to death or up to life in prison. The jury deliberated for a little more than four days, beginning Nov. 27 and taking a three-day weekend. They resumed deliberating for about two hours on Monday before returning the verdict.

They nail 1 in 14? Is that suppose to make everyone happy? I'm not real concerned with what happens to him. I just think 13 more should be joining his party.

Romney: Give Troopers Power to Arrest Illegals Monday, Dec. 4, 2006 2:15 p.m. EST Massachusetts state troopers may soon be allowed to arrest immigrants who are in the state illegally. Currently, troopers have no power to detain people for violations of their immigration status. Troopers currently can call federal authorities for a check of their immigration status, and detain them if federal officials request it. But Gov. Mitt Romney's office reportedly says the governor has worked out a deal with federal officials under which troopers will have the power to arrest. About three dozen troopers will be given the authority after they complete a month-long training program. The agreement, which is expected to be announced this week, is being criticized by immigrants rights groups. Ali Noorani, executive director of the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition, says it raises concerns about racial profiling. © 2006 Associated Press.

Feds Raid 6 Swift and Company Meatpacking Plants in Apparent Illegal Immigration Search Tuesday , December 12, 2006 Disassociated Depressed- GREELEY, Colo. — Federal agents raided six Swift & Co. processing plants in six states on Tuesday in search of illegal immigrants who stole the identities of lawful U.S. residents and used their Social Security numbers to get jobs at the beef and pork company. Agents from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency executed search warrants at Swift's processing facilities in Greeley, Colo.; Grand Island, Neb.; Cactus, Texas; Hyrum, Utah; Marshalltown, Iowa; and Worthington, Minn. ICE officials did not have an arrest total but said workers were being arrested on administrative immigration violations and in some cases, existing criminal arrest warrants. The warrants allow federal agents to arrest anyone at the plant who is in the United States illegally. They said criminal charges of aggravated identity theft and other violations were possible. A company statement obtained by FOXNews.com said all the facilities raided except the one in Hyrum are unionized. No civil or criminal charges have yet been filed against Swift or any current employees. The company said every employee hired since 1997 have completed the proper forms and received proper work authorization from the government. "Swift has never condoned the employment of unauthorized workers, nor have we ever knowingly hired such individuals," said Swift & Company CEO Sam Rovit. "Swift has played by the rules and relied in good faith on a program explicitly held out by the president of the United States as an effective tool to help employers comply with applicable immigration laws." Swift said operations at its facilities have been temporarily suspended and expects that ICE will be finished interviewing employees by the end of the day. Once the company gets back up and running, the statement said, "production levels will depend on the number of employees, if any, detained for further interviewing or otherwise unable to return to work." Swift said it's not sure how the 'employee interview process' will affect business or its operations. "Any loss of a significant number of employees at any facility could adversely affect the operations of that facility until Swift is able to replace any lost members of its workforce and return to normal production levels," the statement read. An investigation that began in February of this year indicated that large numbers of illegal immigrants may have used the Social Security numbers of U.S. citizens or residents to get jobs at Swift. Immigration officials and the Federal Trade Commission have identified hundreds of potential victims, ICE said. Representatives from ICE, the Department of Homeland Security, FTC and other agencies will be available to provide additional information on this law enforcement action at a press conference in Washington Wednesday. With operations in Australia as well as the United States, Swift & Company is the country's third fresh meat processor behind Tyson Foods and Cargill Meat Solutions. Once the meat-processing business of agriculture giant ConAgra, Swift was spun off and is now indirectly owned through various holding companies such as HM Capital Partners (formerly Hicks, Muse, Tate & Furst) and Booth Creek Management. Swift's customers include retail, foodservice and further-processing companies. (and many Truck Dwellers that subsist on cans of BEENIE-WEENIES).

Just think of all the layover and detention pay the meat hauling dwellers will make :P

SWGator- 12-16-2006

Very rare to get layover or detention in that segment of OTR...its just part of the job

Actually in Cactus, Tx the OTR meat crew was having hissy fits. One was kicking dirt on the low paid Security guard. A local cop threatened him so he tucked in his tail and went back to hitting his steering wheel. Go figure

Gunmen Attack National Guard Border Patrol Site in Arizona Friday , January 05, 2007 Disassociated Depressed- TUCSON, Ariz. — National Guard troops working at an observatory post near the Mexican border were forced to flee after being approached by a group of armed individuals, authorities said. The event occurred about 11 p.m. Wednesday at one of the National Guard entrance identification team posts near Sasabe, said National Guard Sgt. Edward Balaban. He said the troops withdrew safely, no shots were fired and no one suffered injuries. U.S. Border Patrol officials are investigating the incident and trying to determine who the armed people were, what they were doing and why they approached the post before retreating to Mexico. The incident occurred in the west desert corridor between Nogales and Lukeville in the vicinity of Sasabe, Balaban said. "We don't know exactly how many because obviously it took place in the dark," Balaban said. "Nobody was able to get an accurate count." The Guard troops are not allowed to apprehend illegal entrants. "We don't know if this was a matter of somebody coming up accidentally on the individuals, coming up intentionally on the individuals, or some sort of a diversion," said Rob Daniels, spokesman for the Border Patrol's Tucson Sector. The west desert corridor has been the busiest in the Tucson Sector for marijuana seizures since last year. Agents have seized 124,000 pounds of marijuana there since Oct. 1, Daniels said. With more Border Patrol agents and National Guard troops patrolling the Arizona section of the U.S.-Mexican border, it has become more difficult to smuggle drugs and people across and "that heightened frustration may have been connected to what took place last night," Daniels said. Officials will make a decision following the investigation about whether changes need to be made in regard to the entrance identification teams, Balaban said. Since arriving in mid-June, the Guard has assisted the Border Patrol by manning control rooms, doing vehicle and helicopter maintenance, repairing roads and fences, constructing vehicle barriers and fences and spotting and reporting illegal entrants in entrance identification teams. There are dozens of National Guard entrance identification teams along the Mexican border, including east and west of both Nogales and Sasabe and on the Tohono O'odham Nation.

National Guard troops working at an observatory post near the Mexican border were forced to flee after being approached by a group of armed individuals, authorities said. This is a misprint, right? It’s supposed to read: “a group of Girl Guides were accosted by thugs while selling cookies”. He said the troops withdrew safely, no shots were fired and no one suffered injuries. Hot damn! That is good news. We wouldn’t want anyone to break a nail while opening a box of cookies. The Guard troops are not allowed to apprehend illegal entrants. Of course not. It would make absolutely no sense to station armed troops along the border to prevent illegal immigration. Not when the government could just as easily waste millions of dollars by using armed troops to fucking COUNT illegal immigrants. Officials will make a decision following the investigation about whether changes need to be made in regard to the entrance identification teams. Here’s a thought: As it would appear that the gubmint’s ultimate goal is to count the number of illegal immigrants which enter the country rather than prevent their entry, let’s automate the system. We can use the under-employed National Guard troops to build paved roads (complete with temperature controlled rest areas) from Mexico to various popular destinations in the U.S. Along these roads can be installed something akin to ‘photo booths’ where the weary traveler can rest for a moment, receive a chilled cervaza and be issued a driver’s license (every 50th customer will receive a CDL) while quaffing his beverage. Interspersed with these ‘licensing stations’ will be credit card booths where each ‘previously undocumented immigrant’ can receive a shiny, new credit card if, and only if, he registers to vote! (tell me I can’t sell that idea to a politician). This is all well and good, you’re probably thinking, but how does it solve the problem of counting the immigrants? Easy, I say. The chauffeur counts them as they get in and out of the U.S. Government limousines.

It's my understanding the guard has no ammunition for their weapons. Ijf that's the case they had no alternative but retreat.
