Congress guts Secure Fence Act Chad Groening OneNewsNow.com December 18, 2007 Grassfire.org, a grassroots border security organization, is outraged that Congress has approved a spending bill that includes an amendment effectively gutting a 2006 bill that called for an 854-mile, double-layered fence to be built along sections of the U.S.-Mexico border. Last night Congress passed a huge spending bill that essentially undermines the Secure Fence Act, which called for the double-layered fence along portions of the border separating the U.S. and Mexico. The bill passed the House primarily along party lines. House Democrats basically adopted the Senate version of the amendment introduced by Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas), who has led charge to change the 2006 bill. According to Steve Elliott, president of Grassfire.org, the bill effectively kills the legislation passed in the last Congress which mandates the fence. "What's disappointing is that the American people a reasonable expectation that a double-layer fence will be built based on the Secure Fence Act passage ," Elliott laments. "But this amendment will, in essence, gut that requirement, will give DHS the option as to whether or not to build the fence in any particular location, and remove the double-layer fence mandate altogether." Elliott says the American people have been effectively duped by Congress. The new provision removes the two-tier requirement that was mandated in the original bill, and also the five specific locations where it was to have been constructed. WhiteRidge Plastics terminates 60 undocumented workers A Staff Report Friday, February 22, 2008 REIDSVILLE - WhiteRidge Plastics, 109 Sands Road in Reidsville, terminated 60 employees after a personnel audit showed documentation on file did not prove the workers' employment eligibility. Max Barton, director of corporate communications and investor relations for Myers Corporation, said WhiteRidge changed ownership in Jan. 2007 when Myers bought ITML Horticulture Products. Myers, based in Akron, Ohio, began a personnel audit of all employees and found 60 WhiteRidge employees whose I-9 forms did not satisfactorily prove they were eligible to work in the U.S. Barton said the employees were told there was a problem with their paperwork and asked for clarification Jan. 21. Barton also did not say if the employees were immigrants to the U.S. "We had to do what was right, which was either have them prove their status or ask them to leave," Barton said. Barton said he did not have information on how long the 60 people were employed by WhiteRidge, but did say they were hired through a staffing agency.
